Aside from the “conventional” fashion trends, there are a lot of alternative styles prevailing globally. These trends have huge loyalty with their own subcultures and unique twists. One of the most popular alternative fashions is the Goth style.

Earlier, due to its dark themes, a lot of people had reservations. Society didn’t accept this culture with an open heart. But as the years have passed and society is being more diverse, Goth culture is flourishing globally.

Goth culture has two varieties. One relates primarily to music, art, and architecture. The other relates to dressing, makeup, and clothes.

Features Of Each Gothic Style

Traditional Goth

This Goth subculture developed during the 70s and 80s in the U.K. It has a high influence from 80s punk rock and rock music.

Some common traits of traditional Goth styles are:

Emo Goth

Although some people prefer it as a separate subculture; there are some strong similarities between Goth and emo. A strong sense of emotion (emo) relates to this Goth.

The use of poetry, literature and music is prevalent.

Common trait includes:

  • Straight long hair with bangs
  • Bright hair colours
  • Ripped skin-tight jeans, and black t-shirts
  • Lots of body piercings (nose, lips, ears) and tattoos.

Victorian Goth

This Gothic style is inspired by the Victorian era. They are royal and elegant. People usually mimic the rich aristocrats with a strong influence of Victorian poetry, music, and dance.

Some of the common features of this style are:

  • Lots of laces.
  • Long ballgowns with corsets.
  • Fitted Gothic blouses with full skirts, gloves, and hats.
  • Choker necklaces and long hair.
  • Apart from black they also use maroons, purple and orange.

Sometimes it is also referred to as Romantic Goth.

Hippie Goth

Hippie Goth style is a blend of Goth culture and Hippie culture. Back in the 70s, when members of Hippie culture started voicing against climate change, restoring nature animals; this subculture of Hippie Goth style was born.

Some of the very common traits of this fashion are:

  • Smoky eyes with neutral lips

Vampire Goth

No not the one you saw in the Vampire Diaries. Although there were some fashion elements of Vampire Goth in the series.

One of the trademarks of this Goth is mimicking the ‘vampire teeth’. In fact, people of this subculture like to sharpen their real teeth to mimic the vampire’s teeth.

Some common features of this Gothic style are:

  • Dark eyes with red lipsticks
  • Spooky and curly hairstyles
  • Long pointy nails
  • Vampire-like fangs
  • Symbolic mysterious jewellery

Sometimes people love to stain their dark clothes with bloodstains to appear more deadly.

Cybergoth

Cybergoth is a more modern version of Goth culture which became prominent in the U.S. back in the 90s.

This Gothic style is all about the ultra-modern futuristic look. Basically, the opposite of Traditional Goth.

Some of the well-known traits of this fashion are:

  • Neon hair colours
  • Gasmasks and googles
  • Chains and body harnesses
  • Electronic music with high energy and dance numbers

Pastel Goth

You will be stunned to know that they promote wearing colours. Bubble or Pastel Goth is all about mixing light and dark colours to make a bridge between spooky beautiful.

Some common features include:

  • Lots of pastel shades of pink, blue, purple, white, and silver
  • Light coloured clothes paired with dark ones
  • Lots of short skirts, colourful hair extensions and fitted tops.
  • Gothic handbags, jewellery, and colourful tattoos.

Casual Goth

Since a lot of Gothic styles are extreme, newer, and more wearable versions of those clothes are getting attention these days.

Casual or soft goth is about wearing Gothic styles with everyday clothing. Megan Fox, Bella Hadid and Kourtney Kardashian are some of the pioneers of this Casual Goth fashion.

Most common traits include:

  • Fitted casual black clothing
  • Neutral makeup with black lipsticks
  • Mysterious delicate jewellery pieces
  • Long poker-straight black hair
